Westchester SC Hoping To Shake Off Road Woes In Richmond

If you’ve been here from the beginning, you already know that the 2026 version of Westchester SC has been a lot more exciting and has enjoyed more early success than the inaugural squad did in 2025. However, if this team is looking to take the next step and become a playoff team and contender, they are going to have to find something that has eluded both this team and last year’s squad: consistency on the road.

For this particular squad, the challenge may actually be simpler than that. They need to find consistency. Period. Every time it seems their form is starting to round out nicely, along comes a mistake-filled night in Greenville or a meltdown in Boise to kill the buzz. Now, this is a young squad under a first-year gaffer in George Gjokaj, so these kinds of things are to be expected. But if they want to compete, and I mean really compete, for USL1 glory, those kinds of games need to be fewer and farther between.

So how do they stack up with Richmond?

Form Guide

Westchester SC enter Friday night still searching for something that has defined their season so far: rhythm.

A heavy 4-0 defeat on the road in Boise was a harsh reminder of how quickly things can unravel when the margins slip. Defensive lapses at key moments turned a competitive match into a runaway result, continuing a troubling trend away from home.

Yet just a week later, back in Mount Vernon, the script flipped again.

In a rain-soaked battle against Portland in USL Cup play, Westchester showed the other side of their identity. They responded to adversity, battled through difficult conditions, and ultimately held their nerve in penalties to secure a result. It wasn’t pretty, and it rarely is with this group, but it was effective.

That contrast has become the defining trait of this team.

One night they can be overwhelmed. The next, they can outlast you.

The question heading into Richmond isn’t whether Westchester are capable. It’s which version shows up.

Richmond, meanwhile, comes into this one with a bit of momentum of their own.

A 2-1 win over Union Omaha gave them their first league victory of the season, with Darwin Espinal opening the scoring early and Tarik Pannholzer finding the winner shortly after halftime. It was not a dominant performance, but it was a gritty one, with Richmond leaning on strong defending and timely saves to close it out.

They followed that up with a 2-1 loss to Charlotte in USL Cup play, a match where the scoreline does not quite tell the full story. Richmond generated chances all night, putting up 23 shots and controlling much of the possession, but were undone by two first-half goals and an inability to finish their opportunities.

That leaves Richmond in an interesting place.

They are capable of creating chances and putting teams under pressure, but like Westchester, they have shown inconsistencies, particularly in front of goal and on set pieces.

In other words, they are not all that different.

Players to Watch

Westchester SC

Headshot of Conor McGlynn in a Westchester SC jersey, facing forward against a neutral background.

Calm from the spot and a steady presence in attacking moments. In a match that could come down to fine margins, his composure matters.

Headshot of Daniel Burko in a Westchester SC jersey, facing forward with a neutral expression.

Found the net last time out and has shown a knack for popping up in key moments. Not always the focal point, but dangerous when the game opens up.

Richmond Kickers

Headshot of Espinal in a red and white jersey, facing forward.

The focal point of Richmond’s attack and already on the scoresheet this season. If Richmond are creating chances, he is usually involved.

Headshot of Kirkland in a red and white jersey, smiling and facing forward.

Active and direct, consistently finding himself in dangerous areas. Richmond will look to him to convert the chances they have been creating.

Headshot of Layton in a red and white jersey with longer hair and a mustache, facing forward.

A presence defensively and a threat on set pieces, an area Westchester will need to stay sharp on.

My Prediction

This matchup has all the makings of a classic Golden Apple script. Go up early and try to hold on late.

All too often they have failed to hold that lead, but on this night they do enough.

Not the controlled, consistent effort we are hoping to see yet, but another demonstration of this team’s ability to grit out games.

Westchester SC 3 – 2 Richmond

What AI Is Saying

If you are looking for a clean, controlled match, this probably is not it.

Richmond have shown they can generate chances, while Westchester have shown they are more than willing to turn a match into something chaotic. That combination usually leads to goals, swings in momentum, and a game that feels like it could go either way at any moment.

AI Prediction: Richmond 2 – 2 Westchester SC

INJURY UPDATE (4/30/26)

Just as this piece was going live, Westchester SC’s biggest question mark for Friday night became a lot clearer, and a lot more complicated.

Starting keeper Andrew Hammersley went down with an injury in last Saturday’s win, and backup Mattias Molina is now sidelined as well with a knee issue. That leaves Westchester suddenly scrambling between the posts heading into a tough road match in Richmond.

In response, the club has added goalkeeper Luca Marinelli and activated goalkeeper coach Giuliano Santucci to the roster.

Marinelli brings an interesting profile. Born in Rome and raised in Milford, Connecticut, he starred at Sacred Heart University, the same program as Hammersley, and was named the 2025 MAAC Golden Glove winner. He anchored a conference-winning side, posting a 0.73 goals against average with five shutouts, and finished near the top of the league in every major goalkeeping category.

He also backstopped AC Connecticut to the 2025 USL Academy Championship.

Santucci, a Westchester native, adds a different kind of depth. He played professionally in Colombia after a strong collegiate career at Marist and Iona, where he helped lead Iona to its first MAAC Championship.

What this means for Friday night is anyone’s guess.

It adds another layer of unpredictability to a match that already felt like it could go in any direction. If Westchester are going to find a result in Richmond, they may now have to do it with a completely reshuffled situation in goal.
