Westchester SC Once Again Can't Score A @;&!@#-ing Goal Away From Memorial Field
When the final whistle blew in Florida on Saturday night, Westchester SC once again found themselves on the short end of a 1-nil scoreline and my mind immediately drifted to the wise words of the great philosopher Q*bert when he said, “@;&?@#”.
Ah yes, Randy. Reel in those younger readers with a reference to a video game no one has played since 1983. Finger on the pulse as always.
But really, what else is there to say but "@;&?@#"?
Westchester’s goalless streak away from the friendly confines of Memorial Field has now ballooned to 502 minutes. Not quite as bad as Chelsea earlier this year, but not exactly good either.
The Match: Insert Goal
Honestly, if you want, you can probably just go read any of the previous away match recaps because very little has changed. Westchester controlled possession, did not score, and lost.
There was also a weather delay of about an hour, so there’s that.
The positive sign is that it was another hard-fought game contested right up until the death.
The not-so-positive sign is that the performance itself didn’t feel nearly as sharp as the previous road defeats.
Against both Richmond and Ft. Wayne, Westchester at least looked like the better side for long stretches. They controlled over 54% of possession in both matches, piled up corners, and consistently created pressure through interceptions and second balls. The finishing was absent, but the overall play largely wasn’t.
This one felt different.
While Westchester still edged possession at 51.9% and won seven corners to Naples’ one, they lost nearly 60% of their duels, were beaten badly in the air, and never really imposed themselves on the match consistently until the frantic final minutes.
Against Richmond and Ft. Wayne, the feeling leaving the stadium was, “How did we not get something from that?” Against Naples, the feeling was more “@;&?@#” with a side of “We got what we deserved.”
As for gaffer George Gjokaj? While it’s still far too early to say the coach’s seat is getting hot, it’s not unfair to say the seat may start warming up with the New York weather.
When a team performs this poorly away from home, questions naturally start getting asked and ultimately it’s the manager’s job to answer them.
Why does the team consistently look less assertive away from Memorial Field?
Why are they losing physical battles on the road?
Why does possession so often feel sterile away from home?
Why does the attack only seem to truly wake up after conceding?
When these things happen once in a while, you can frame them a lot of different ways. When they keep happening over a 500-plus minute scoreless streak away from home, they stop feeling random and start feeling systemic.
That is a problem.
The Future: Press Start To Continue
While the schedule does at least provide the Blue and Gold with a brief chance to return home and regroup, their road form will immediately be tested again on June 6th when they take a step up in class against USL Championship side Rhode Island FC in the Prinx Cup.
This will be their first Prinx Cup match since their devastating collapse at home against New Jersey.
Frankly, this is probably the worst possible trip for a team desperately trying to rediscover itself away from Memorial Field, but the schedule is the schedule. Perhaps the jump in competition will inspire something from a club currently in desperate need of it.
We’ll preview that match in the coming days as we get closer to kickoff.
