Greenville Triumph Arrives in Form as Stormy Weather Looms Over Westchester SC at Memorial Field
Wednesday night felt like a long time coming.
After more than two matches without finding the back of the net, Westchester SC finally broke through in spectacular fashion against Fort Wayne FC. In the 28th minute, captain Conor McGlynn got on his bike and ended the drought, connecting on an absolute worldie of a bicycle kick that will surely find itself firmly in the Goal of the Year conversation.
The strike sent Memorial Field into a frenzy and gave Westchester a deserved lead against one of the hottest teams in USL League One. While Fort Wayne eventually found an equalizer in the second half, the 1-1 draw still felt like a step forward for a side that had struggled to generate offense in recent weeks.
It also provided an exhilarating start to the evening before many in attendance headed home to watch the Knicks pull off one of the most improbable playoff comebacks in franchise history.
Now comes the challenge of doing it all over again.
Getting Used To The Grind
If Wednesday's draw felt like a quick turnaround, Westchester had better get comfortable.
The summer schedule is about to become unforgiving.
Sunday's meeting with Greenville is followed by another home date against Marketing FC on June 19 before challenging road trips to Spokane and Chattanooga. After returning home to face AC Boise on July 5, Westchester will head back on the road for a Prinx Tires Cup matchup against Hartford Athletic before league trips to Union Omaha and AV Alta. The stretch is broken up only by a July 22 home date against the hated New Jersey Cosmos, one of the most anticipated fixtures remaining on the schedule.
For players and coaches alike, managing recovery, squad rotation and travel will become increasingly important. The clubs that navigate the summer grind best are often the clubs still playing meaningful matches in October.
For Westchester, that process begins Sunday night.
A Tale Of Two Teams
Greenville arrives in Mount Vernon playing its best soccer of the season.
The Triumph have won back-to-back matches, defeating Forward Madison 1-0 before dispatching Loudoun United 3-1 on Wednesday night. More importantly, they appear to be getting contributions from throughout the lineup. William Akio scored his first goal for the club against Loudoun, Connor Evans netted his first goal of the season and Jason Bouregy recorded the first professional goal of his career.
The attack has suddenly come alive.
Westchester's recent form tells a different story.
The Golden Apple have picked up just one point from their last three matches, though context matters. Two of those contests came away from Memorial Field, where the club's road struggles have been well documented. At home, however, Westchester remains a different team entirely. The club is unbeaten in its last three league matches at Memorial Field and owns a 2-1-1 home record in league play this season.
If Greenville's confidence comes from recent victories, Westchester's confidence comes from knowing where it is playing.
What Westchester Needs To Do
For Westchester, Sunday's blueprint is relatively straightforward.
The version of Westchester that has shown up at Memorial Field this season is capable of beating anyone in USL League One. The challenge has been producing that version consistently. Sunday's matchup presents another opportunity to prove that the club's home form is no coincidence and that the positive signs shown against Fort Wayne can translate into three points.
First, they need to start on the front foot. Greenville has built momentum during its winning streak by scoring first and forcing opponents to chase matches. An early goal would not only energize the crowd but could force the Triumph out of their defensive shape.
Second, Westchester must capitalize on set pieces. McGlynn's goal against Fort Wayne highlighted the quality the club possesses in dead-ball situations, and opportunities may be at a premium against a Greenville side that has defended well recently.
Finally, the Golden Apple need more support around their attacking core. Too often this season, strong individual moments have not been followed by sustained offensive pressure. Against a Greenville team arriving full of confidence, Westchester will need ninety minutes of attacking intent rather than isolated flashes.
Do that, and a third home league victory is well within reach.
Players To Watch
Fresh off a spectacular bicycle kick against Fort Wayne FC, the Westchester captain enters Sunday's match in search of a repeat performance. McGlynn's ability to impact the game from open play and set pieces makes him one of the most dangerous players on the field whenever he steps onto it.
Greenville's recent resurgence has coincided with a strong run of form from Azaad Liadi. The forward scored the winner in the Triumph's historic home opener against Forward Madison and followed it up with an assist against Loudoun United. If available after exiting Wednesday's match with an injury, Liadi will likely be the focal point of Greenville's attack.
Keeping An Eye On The Sky
As if the short turnaround wasn't enough, Mother Nature may have a say as well.
Current forecasts are calling for thunderstorms in the area throughout much of Sunday evening. While weather forecasts can change quickly, players and supporters alike should be prepared for the possibility of wet conditions and potential delays.
Should the rain arrive, the match could become far more direct and physical. Slick turf can speed up play, create unpredictable bounces and place a greater emphasis on winning second balls and limiting mistakes in possession.
In other words, it may not be pretty.
But three points count the same regardless of the forecast.
