No Time For Rest As Westchester SC Face A Quick Turnaround And Hot Opponent At Memorial Field

There is no time to dwell on Saturday night's result in Rhode Island.

Just four days after a 3-0 defeat at the hands of USL Championship side Rhode Island FC, Westchester SC is right back in action Wednesday night when Fort Wayne FC visits Memorial Field.

The quick turnaround may be exactly what the Golden Apple needs. While the scoreline in Pawtucket was disappointing, the bigger concern remains an attack still searching for answers away from home. Following Saturday's defeat, Westchester's road scoreless streak now stands at 592 away minutes across all competitions.

Fortunately for George Gjokaj's side, tonight's match provides an immediate opportunity to turn the page and refocus in front of a home crowd.

Last Time Out Against Fort Wayne

For the first time this season, Westchester enters a match facing an opponent for the second time.

The clubs first met on May 10 at Fort Wayne's newly opened Ruoff Mortgage Stadium, where a single moment of quality separated the sides. Taig Healy's 35th-minute finish, set up by Michael Rempel, proved to be the difference in a tightly contested 1-0 Fort Wayne victory.

Despite leaving Indiana empty-handed, Westchester could take some encouragement from the performance at the time. The Golden Apple created opportunities throughout the evening and forced Fort Wayne goalkeeper Bernd Schipmann into four saves. One of the best chances fell to Koen Blommestijn in the 29th minute, only for Schipmann to come up with a point-blank stop to keep the match scoreless.

Ultimately, it was one of those nights where the margins were razor thin. Fort Wayne took advantage of its opportunity, Schipmann delivered another clean sheet performance, and Westchester was left wondering what might have been.

The challenge will be considerable. Fort Wayne enters Wednesday unbeaten in its last seven USL League One matches, the longest active streak in the league.

With the return fixture shifting to Memorial Field, George Gjokaj's side will be hoping home-field advantage can help turn a narrow defeat into a different result.

Players To Watch

It feels like a matter of when, not if.

While the Dutch forward has yet to find the scoresheet in league play, he has consistently found dangerous positions. He came within inches of changing the first meeting between these clubs when Bernd Schipmann denied him from point-blank range in the 29th minute.

With Fort Wayne likely focused on containing familiar threats such as Conor McGlynn and Dean Guezen, Wednesday could present an opportunity for Blommestijn to enjoy the breakout performance many supporters have been waiting for.

Fort Wayne FC forward Taig Healy poses in the club's black and gold kit ahead of the USL League One match against Westchester SC at Memorial Field.

Fort Wayne FC: Taig Healy

There was little debate on this one.

Healy scored the lone goal when these clubs met in Indiana and arrives in Mount Vernon as one of the league's most in-form forwards. The first-year professional has scored five league goals and helped power Fort Wayne's current seven-match unbeaten run in league play.

When Fort Wayne needs a moment of quality in the final third, Healy has repeatedly delivered. Westchester learned that firsthand in May and will be determined not to let him decide the rematch as well.

Westchester has already shown it can hang with Fort Wayne. The question Wednesday night is whether the Golden Apple can turn a narrow defeat into three points on home soil.
