Westchester SC Looking To Prove Away Goal Drought Does Not Define Them
It’s a new matchweek, but all of the questions remain the same.
The Westchester SC team bus rolls into Ft. Wayne this Saturday in search of their first away goal in 322 minutes across all competitions. It’s been a brutal 0-0-3 start to the road portion of the season, one that has marred the optimism built from an improved home record and an admirable US Open Cup performance.
If this team is serious about its stated goal of making the playoffs, it needs to find points on the road. And that starts with finding goals on the road.
Form Guide: Style Clash
“It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose.”
If you enjoy a good clash of styles, this week’s match is for you.
Ft. Wayne likes to score fast in early bunches. Westchester likes to control tempo. These two styles cannot co-exist.
Fort Wayne showed exactly who they are in their home opener against Charlotte, scoring in the 4th and 10th minutes before the match had even settled. They followed a similar script against Louisville in USL Cup play, finding the net in the 5th minute and immediately putting their opponent under pressure. When they are at their best, they don’t ease into matches.
They try to blow them open early.
Westchester, on the other hand, has struggled when forced into that kind of game. In Richmond, they conceded in the 14th minute and spent the rest of the night chasing, controlling possession and creating chances but never finding the equalizer. In Boise, things got away from them entirely in a 4-0 loss, another match where falling behind early turned into a long night.
For Ft. Wayne, the goal is to get out front early and make the Golden Apple chase the game, something they have struggled to do.
For Westchester, it will be about weathering the early storm, controlling the pace, and then punching on the counter.
The first goal in this match may tell you everything you need to know.
Players to Watch
“Make it so.”

Westchester SC
The last player to score an away goal for Westchester, and at this point that alone puts him in focus. Calm on the ball and capable of stepping up in big moments, they’ll need him to be the one who finally breaks the drought.
Continues to pop up in dangerous spots and has shown he can find the net at home. The next step is doing it on the road. If Westchester is going to strike on the counter, Burko feels like the most likely outlet.

Luca Marinelli
Thrown into the fire in Richmond and responded with five saves in his debut. This match could hinge on how he handles the early pressure. If Fort Wayne comes out flying again, he’ll be tested immediately.

Fort Wayne FC
A constant aerial threat and already on the scoresheet in their home opener. Dangerous on set pieces and early balls into the box, exactly the kind of player who can punish a slow start.
Active around the goal and quick to react in the box, as shown by his goal against Charlotte. Lives off chaos, which makes him especially dangerous in the kind of fast starts Fort Wayne prefers.
More of a creator, but just as important. Involved in multiple attacking sequences and capable of unlocking defenses early. If Fort Wayne is going to jump on Westchester, there’s a good chance he’s involved in the buildup.
X-Factor
“I’m givin’ her all she’s got, Captain!”
Will Ft. Wayne’s fast attacking style be slowed by the fact that they will have to play a home match against the Hearts of Pine tonight and will be playing on short rest?
UPDATE: Ft. Wayne scored a decisive 3-0 victory over Marketing SC. Here's hoping they tired themselves out.
My Prediction
“Dammit Jim, I’m a doctor, not a prognosticator!”
This match game will look like it’s going well for Westchester until it isn’t.
Westchester will defend well early and capitalize before the half on a Ft. Wayne team that has had a busier schedule, but in the second half complacency will settle in and
Westchester allows a late equalizer.
Randy's Prediction: Westchester SC 1 – 1 Ft. Wayne FC
What AI Says
“I don’t believe in no-win scenarios.”
This match sets up as a battle between two teams that want to play at very different speeds.
Fort Wayne has shown a tendency to strike early and turn matches into chaotic, end-to-end affairs, while Westchester has preferred a more controlled approach, even if the finishing hasn’t followed. The added factor of short rest could slow Fort Wayne slightly, but their early energy at home has been consistent.
The key moment will likely come in the opening 20 minutes. If Westchester can survive that initial push, they should be able to settle into the match and create chances. The question is whether they can finally convert one on the road.
AI Prediction: Ft. Wayne FC 2 – 1 Westchester SC
